The finest Australia has to offer?

The finest Australia has to offer

Archives

My wife and I have just retired and we are looking to travel Australia in style! We have come over from NZ on an extended holiday and we are very keen to know what there is to do. Just so you know, we are definitely not into camping or back packing! We are looking to explore the finer things that Australia has to offer, stay in some great places and see the amazing surroundings. What do you suggest?

Congratulations to Magicalmarilyn, GeraghtyLee, and Edward_Bassinthwaight for their contributions to our Finest of Australia Blog. Thank you to every one who participated on this blog. Best regards, OpinionsPaid Team.

You may say that you are not into camping but the best thing I have done in the past 40 years is a trip along the Gibb river road in the Kimberley. We did it last year, by ourselves and camped, but there are some  wonderful tour companies who do this trip in various forms. It is truly maginficent and something that very few Australians get to see. There are some very flash accomodation options and fly in fly out opportunities. Start in Kunnanurra - do a dinner cruise on Lake Arglye, fly over the bungle bungles then head to  the Gibb River road - places not to miss are El Questro ( they have some very nice accomodation options from 5 star to camping) - on el questro don't miss Emma Gorge, Moonshine gorge, El Questro gorge and Zebedee hot springs  - just to die for - early morning lying back in warm rock pools looking up through the maginificent palms and red rock cliffs of the gorge.

Manning Gorge and Galvans gorge is also another beautiful gorge but it is camping - althought the tour companies will put the tents up for you and supply everything.  Fly up to the Mitchell plateau and mitchell falls - just fantastice. Bell Gorge and Windjana gorge the same. Thousands of freshwater crocs to see at Windjana - amazing. Tunnel Creek is also very interesting to walk through. The horizontal falls at Derby was a real thrill of a ride and highly recommended. The reward at the end is beautiful Broome - stay at cable beach - most of the resorts are really good

We stayed at Cable beachside resort - very comfortable and walking distance to everything - if you have the time go up to Middle Lagoon and Cape Leveque - on the dampier peninsula - just superb - check out the Kooljamin website - we stayed in the beach shelters right on the beach

Middle lagoon is also beautiful as is Lombadina - has the best bread I've ever tasted - baked Monday , Wed and Friday - you have to get there early to make sure they don't well out - the most beautiful beach I have ever seen and to die for shells I collected. The Kimberley coastal camp is somewhere if you can afford it would be worth going to- you have to fly there and it is expensive but 5 star all the way.

check out the internet for all the info on these places and you will find lots of tour companies with tours for all budgets - this is a good place to start

http://www.kimberleytourism.com/  this area something you won't see anywhere else and we are planning our next trip up there again from Melbourne for 2009 - if I can answer any questions just ask

Central Australia is the place you can experience outback nature & spectacular landscape. You can do this in a comfortable & personalised manner.

It depends on whether you want to drive or not.

If not, then seriously consider our wonderful train services. Book a sleeper and travel across the Nullabor, take the Ghan through the centre, Melbourne to Cairns is amazing.

Don't miss Kangaroo Island. You can get a package deal that includes a bus from Adelaide to Cape Jervis (and return, of course but you might be temoted to stay), the ferry ride to the island, accommodation on the island and tours around it. See the sea-lions at Seal Bay, remarkable Rocks in Flinders Chase national park, fairy penguins at Penneshaw, stunning coastal views and, of course kangaoos.

And Venus bay, about two and a half hours drive from Melbourne is a stunning seaside area. Rent a cottage for a few days or weeks. Enjoy walks along the sandy beach, fish in the river or ocean, meet the friendly locals.

For something entirely different, visit the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Karajinii national park has deep gorges, Millstream Chichester national park has beautiful permanent waterholes that are part of a river system. If you like rocks, this is the place to fossick.

Hope this whets your appetite.

I live on the cusp of the Hunter Valley centred on the former steel making city of Newcastle.    Novocastrians (newcastleites) will tell you the beaches and tourism is equal to any coastal regional city in the country .. so come and see for yourself.    Then if you drink wine go to the many Hunter valley wineries and compare our Sav Blanc/semillion to that of NZ.  some say the best in the world is produced in the Hunter Valley.   The reds are OK but for fine Australian red esp shiraz you must visit the Barossa Valley NE of Adelaide.     You could spend a long time just doing the best Australian wineries.  Go to Barossa SA; Clare Valley VIC;  Hunter Valley NSW; Tamar Valley TAS; Margaret River WA for a good introduction.     Be safe and watch out for speed cameras in NSW esp.

There are many things to do & see in Australia (too many to list) I would suggest to have a look at some websites to give you a better idea on how you would like to see Australia & make your travel plans easier. One of the many websites site I know of is www.totaltravel.com.au this website has lists of many places to visit & activities to do all around Australia. It has a map so you can choose what area in Australia you would like to travel to & then gives you lists of resorts, hotels, wineries, places of interest, tours, pricings etc. It has reviews both good & bad on certain places to give you an idea of what others thought when they visited there.

Drive see the sights, go on the bus or travel by train the inner city to the country line, visit the beach, visit the eateries, visit the mountains, wineries, wild life etc., so much to do go for it. We live in a multicultural land so I'm sure if you try everything, you'll find what you like best.    Moira Hall

As with any country, the people you meet can make your holiday extra special. We joined a club (free membership) that allows us to link up with people to either stay with them or just meet the for a cuppa. It is international and there are many Australian members, so you can meet the locals.     http://www.hospitalityclub.org/

When in WA, make the trip to New Norcia, Australia's only monastic town. The Benedictine Abeey is stunning, the history of the town is amazing and the religious artwork in the gallery is beyond belief. Join one of the tours and learn about this important part of Aussi history. You don't have to be religious to enjoy this experience. We sure aren't and we spent a couple of days there.

Then head to the Pinnacles Desert, situated within the Nambung National Park, just west of Cervantes. The unusual rock formations look like buildings and people. We watched the sunset while there and it was a wonderful, close-to-nature experience.

Enjoy our wonderful country, mate.

Hey,

There are plenty of things to do in Australia but whenever I travel overseas I remind myself to do things you can only do in that particular country/place. I recommend simply visiting an Information Outlet that are placed in many spots around the city, I'm not sure about the country though. But the answers you have recieved seem to be great and detailed. Happy Travelling!
